Focus on Paul Taylor Eyewear

Meet the man behind one of our favourite fashion eyewear collections

Sometimes we don’t realise that the names behind our favourite brands are actually real people, or that they’re still not only alive but actively designing under the banner of their brand name. But Paul Taylor, of Paul Taylor Eyewear, is definitely a real-life person! And his bright, engaging personality shines through in his eyewear collections, which are favorites of ours at Greenlane Penrose Optometrist.

From optometrist to eyewear designer

It’s pretty common for large fashion houses and sportswear designers to put out eyewear collections that are in keeping with the overall style of their brand. You may have owned a pair of Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas, or Country Road glasses yourself over the years. What’s less common is to find eyewear brands that are designed by someone with a technical optometry background.

Australian Paul Taylor began working in the world of optometry when he undertook a four-year apprenticeship in Optical Mechanics. After more than nine years developing his skills in the making of ophthalmic prescription lenses, he became an optical dispenser, otherwise known as an optician. It was in this role that Paul discovered his talent in and passion for designing. His technical, patient-facing background meant that he knew what worked and didn’t work when it came to fashion eyewear design.

Design as a way to help people

Optometrists are in the business of helping people: they diagnose vision problems and help patients select the best devices or treatments to fix their problems. But fashion eyewear designers also help people. Paul Taylor the designer became committed to making quality products with top-notch materials.

Whatever a patient’s vision problem, if they can find a pair of fashion eyewear glasses that they love, that fit them well, that reflect their style and personality, and that are strong and can withstand daily wear, then their life has been improved.

A designer with a cult following

The designs of Paul Taylor Eyewear have been called “enchanting” and “mesmerising”, and it’s easy to see why he’s gained such a following of loyal customers. His signature piece that kicked off his eyewear collections was a retro-style catseye frame. Many of his styles take inspiration from the 1950s, and are more than a little glam! Fire engine red is his signature colour. At the same time, his collections do include some more conventional, functional styles for wearers who prefer a more understated look for everyday wear. Think bold acetate frames, colour, and timeless appeal.

At Greenlane Penrose Optometrist we recently updated our range of Paul Taylor Eyewear optical frames and sunglasses, after viewing the eyewear collection virtually! We are thrilled with the new range, and think you will be, too. If you need a new pair of glasses or just want to update your look, we invite you to come in and browse the eyewear collection in store – once we’re at level 2 and can welcome customers to our practice again, of course.
